Prolific is an online platform, co-founded at Oxford University in 2014, that matches people with researchers who need participants for studies and tasks. This guide sticks to what Prolific publishes itself, says where its pages leave questions open and keeps third-party opinions out of the facts. Last checked: 27 October 2026.
Key takeaways
- Prolific is a named company that has operated for over a decade, and its own pages say participants are paid in cash, never gift cards or points.
- You can cash out once your approved balance reaches $6 or £6. That is a payout threshold, not an hourly rate.
- Pay per hour: n/d. Prolific's participant pages we read give no hourly figure, and the SOJI Pay Index does not cover Prolific.
- Access is by waitlist and invite, so there is no guarantee of work.

What Prolific is
On its participant page, Prolific describes itself as a way to take part in research and get paid for it. Studies are opt-in: you choose a task from your dashboard, and Prolific says you can leave any task at any time. Eligibility filters decide which studies you see, so the supply depends on your profile.
What Prolific says about pay
| Item | What Prolific states |
|---|---|
| Payment form | Cash only, "no gift cards or cashback" |
| Cash-out minimum | $6 or £6, combined across both currencies |
| Payout method | PayPal, usually within 24 hours |
| Hourly rate | n/d |
Prolific's help article on cashing out adds three details. Pending earnings move to available once a researcher approves them, which can take up to 22 days. You can cash out once every 24 hours, and the wait is 72 hours if you recently changed your PayPal address or have made fewer than four cash-outs. Prolific says these waits cannot be lifted. The page does not mention PayPal fees.
The reward per study is set by the researcher who posts it. We did not find a current official hourly minimum on the pages we opened, so we do not quote one.
How getting started works
- Join the waitlist. Prolific says you accept an invite once studies are available for you.
- Verify your identity. Prolific says it takes about 15 minutes and includes a short practice task.
- Pick studies from your dashboard. New tasks appear throughout the day, and you decide which to take.
- Cash out through PayPal once you reach the minimum.
The participant page does not list age or country requirements, so check the Participant Help Center for your own situation.
How steady is the work?
Not guaranteed. Studies depend on what researchers publish and on whether you match their filters. Treat Prolific as occasional, variable income and compare any study's stated reward with its stated time before you start.
Is Prolific legit? A checklist
- A named company with a long record stands behind it.
- Nothing asks you to pay to join in the official flow we read.
- Payment goes to your own PayPal account, and Prolific says cash-out happens inside your account.
- Studies are voluntary, and you can exit at any point.
- Be careful with look-alikes. Only use Prolific's own domain, and never share ID documents or passwords over email or chat. For basics, see how to spot legitimate AI training jobs and avoid scams.
Alternatives to compare
- Platforms we have reviewed the same way: Outlier and DataAnnotation; also Alignerr and Handshake AI.
- Listings with pay shown up front: Mercor jobs and Micro1 jobs on SOJI, with medians in the SOJI Pay Index.
Limitations
We are an independent site. We cannot see inside any company or confirm anyone's personal experience, and we cannot guarantee any outcome. We read Prolific's public pages only, not logged-in dashboards. Prolific is not a SOJI partner and SOJI earns nothing if you join. Policies and rates change, so the live terms are the right source.
