Is Handshake AI Legit? Pay, Eligibility and Alternatives (2026)
Handshake AI is different from most platforms in this space: it is run by Handshake, the well-known careers network, and it is limited to people based in the United States. That single rule decides whether the rest of this guide is useful to you, so we start there. Last checked: 13 October 2026.
Who can join, and who cannot
On its AI fellowship page, Handshake says applicants must be "based in the U.S." and have work authorization that Handshake can support. International students on F-1 status who are eligible for CPT or OPT may qualify, but STEM OPT is not supported, and Handshake tells students to confirm with their school's designated official. It has a help-center article on work authorization and one on international fellows.
If you live outside the United States, this program is probably not open to you, and it is better to know that before you spend time on it. Skip to the alternatives section below.
What Handshake AI is
Handshake describes the work as helping to train and improve AI models, remotely and part-time: you "can do anytime". Listings include roles such as AI Evaluation Specialist, FP&A Analyst, Game Developer or Designer, PCB Tool Specialist, Philosophy Expert, Software Engineer and an energy professional role. Handshake says "no AI experience required", and listings mention degree levels from associate's to PhD and postdoc.
What Handshake says about pay
- Headline: "Earn up to $100/hr".
- Listed rates: from "up to $17/hr" for an AI Evaluation Specialist role to "up to $125/hr" for Game Developer or Designer and PCB Tool Specialist roles. The $100 headline and the $125 listings are not reconciled on the page.
- Pay is hourly, and the figures are "up to" maximums, not a guaranteed rate for every project.
- Third-party figures vary widely, from about $20 to $35 per hour for generalist work to $60 to $150 for specialist work. These are not from Handshake, and some may be out of date.
For context, the SOJI Pay Index (13 October 2026) shows a median advertised pay of about $76 per hour on Mercor and Micro1 roles. It is a different dataset, so use it only as a reference.
How you get paid
Handshake's AI help center lists articles on payments processing, eligible earnings, Stripe setup, tax forms, tax withholding and EIN information. That points to contractor-style payments set up through Stripe, but the fellowship page itself says only "Get paid" and does not state the payment method or frequency. Read those help-center articles after you sign up.
How the application works
Handshake lists these steps: sign up, verify your identity, get matched to a project, complete training, contribute your expertise and get paid. The help center also has articles on identity verification, a background check, assessments, time tracking and a policy titled "Original Work and Prohibition on Usage of LLMs".
Matching depends on project availability and your expertise, and not everyone is placed immediately, according to third-party sources. Handshake does not state project length on the page we read. The same sources describe projects of roughly two weeks to a couple of months, and part-time hours when assigned, so treat these as reports.
Is Handshake AI legit? A checklist
- A well-known company stands behind it. Handshake is an established careers network, and the program is described on its own domain.
- Eligibility is clear. U.S.-based, with the right work authorization.
- Use the official sign-up only. Start from joinhandshake.com. Its help center includes articles on recognizing legitimate communications and identifying fraud, which are worth reading.
- Know the rules on AI tools. The original-work policy matters if you plan to use LLMs.
- Calculate your real hourly rate, including training and assessment time.
Alternatives, especially if you are outside the U.S.
- Roles open worldwide, with pay shown: on SOJI, Mercor jobs and Micro1 jobs show the countries each role is open to. About two thirds of the roles with pay shown are open worldwide.
- Other platforms we have reviewed in the same way: Outlier, DataAnnotation and Alignerr.
- Comparing the two platforms we list: Micro1 vs Mercor: which platform fits your profile.

Limitations of this guide
We are an independent site. We cannot see inside any company, we cannot confirm anyone's personal experience and we cannot guarantee any outcome. Several Handshake help-center pages list titles that we could not read in full, so we report only what is stated. Pay and policies change, so the live terms are always the right source.
SOJI is an independent job board and is not affiliated with Handshake, and we earn nothing if you join Handshake AI. If you apply to Mercor or Micro1 through our referral links and are hired, SOJI may earn a commission at no cost to you, and this does not affect which jobs we publish. Read more on our About page.
