Micro1 vs Mercor: Which AI Training Platform Fits Your Profile?

Micro1 and Mercor are two of the best-known marketplaces where professionals get paid to train and evaluate AI systems. They look similar from the outside, but there are practical differences worth knowing before you spend time applying.

What they have in common

  • Independent contractor engagements, usually remote.
  • Work built around your domain expertise: reviewing outputs, writing rubrics, evaluating responses or recording data.
  • Hourly rates that vary a lot by field, seniority and language.
  • Referral programs, which is why you will see referral links on listings.

How applying differs

Micro1 screens candidates with an AI-led recruiting interview and asks short qualifying questions on each job post, such as when you can start, your expected hourly rate and weekly availability. Many roles also ask you to be ready to sign a contract quickly once selected.

Mercor uses a shared set of steps across listings: resume, a domain expert interview and work authorization. Once these are done they are reused for other roles, which makes applying to several listings faster.

Listing styles and pay

Micro1 publishes a very large number of roles, including many language, transcription and audio-recording tasks alongside engineering, legal and finance positions. Mercor listings are often project-based, and some are paid per task rather than per hour. Always check the pay unit: a per-task rate and an hourly rate are not comparable at a glance.

Which one should you apply to first?

  • Bilingual or language skills: Micro1 tends to list many language roles, so start there.
  • Senior professional profiles (law, finance, consulting, medicine): check both, and compare the rate, weekly hours and location rules.
  • Limited time: pick the platform where you already have the strongest, most up-to-date resume and apply to three to five matching roles.

A note on expectations

On both platforms, completing the application does not guarantee work. Assignment depends on project demand, location and your profile. Apply broadly, be patient and keep your contact details current.
