Time Zones and Remote Jobs: What to Check Before You Apply

Before you apply to a remote job, check three things about time zones: whether the role names a country or region, how many hours must overlap with the team's working day, and whether meetings or deadlines are fixed. A role open worldwide can still need you online at set times.

Where applicants can live

Listings state where applicants can be located. Some are open to any country, others to one country or a list of them. The limit often comes from tax, legal or payment rules, not only from time zones. If a role says "US only", applying from elsewhere will not work. SOJI shows this on each listing and lets you filter by country.

Overlap hours

Ask how many hours per day must overlap with the team. Typical arrangements include:

  • Fully asynchronous. You work when you like and deliver by a deadline.
  • A few shared hours. The team needs you online for a window each day.
  • Fixed shifts. You work set hours in a named time zone, often for support or review work.

Read the listing for words like "overlap", "core hours" or a named time zone. If it says nothing, ask in the interview. See questions to ask in a remote job interview.

Work out the real hours

Convert the employer's hours to your local time and include daylight saving changes, which happen on different dates in different countries. Do the conversion for the days in winter and summer if the role is long term. A call at 3 pm in one city may fall in the middle of the night in another.

Check how you are paid

Pay is often in US dollars or euros. Confirm the currency, the payment dates and the payment method that works in your country. Exchange rates and transfer fees affect what arrives. For help working out your net pay, use the freelance tax calculator.

Practical tips

  1. Put the employer's time zone next to yours in your calendar.
  2. Share your working hours clearly in your first messages.
  3. Agree response times for messages, so nobody expects an instant answer at night.
  4. Say upfront if you cannot attend meetings at certain hours.

Frequently asked questions

Can I work for a company in a very different time zone?

Yes, if the role is asynchronous or has few fixed hours. If it needs a long overlap, the schedule may be hard to keep.

Does "worldwide" mean I can work any hours?

Not always. It means the role accepts applicants from any country. The listing or the interview should say whether there are set hours.

Do I need to tell the employer where I live?

Yes. Location affects contracts, tax and payment, and many platforms ask for it.

Limitations

Time zone, tax and payment rules vary by employer and country. Confirm them in the listing and the contract.
