Questions to Ask in a Remote Job Interview (and What the Answers Reveal)
In a remote interview, ask about pay, hours, tools, communication and how your work is judged. The answers show whether the job is organised and whether the employer treats remote staff as equals. Below are questions worth asking, grouped by what they reveal.
Questions about the work
- What does a normal week look like in this role?
- Which projects would I start with, and who sets my priorities?
- How is the quality of my work reviewed, and by whom?
- What does a good first three months look like?
Questions about pay and terms
- Is the role employment or contract work?
- What is the pay, in which currency, and how often am I paid?
- Are hours guaranteed, or do they depend on project demand?
- Who pays for equipment and software, and is training provided?
- Is there a probation or trial period, and is it paid?
These questions matter most for contractors, because hours and payment terms vary widely between platforms. If you work as a contractor, use the freelance tax calculator to see what a rate leaves after tax.
Questions about how the team works
- Which tools does the team use for chat, meetings and documents?
- Does the team share working hours, and which time zones does it cover? See time zones and remote jobs.
- How are decisions and feedback shared with people who work remotely?
- How often do people meet, online or in person?
Questions about growth
- How do people move into larger roles in this company?
- How does the team measure results for remote staff?
- What would make someone in this role stand out?
Questions to end the interview
- Is there anything about my background you would like me to clarify?
- What are the next steps and when should I expect to hear from you?
Note how directly each answer is given. A clear, specific reply is a good sign. Vague replies about pay or duties are covered in red flags in remote job interviews.
Frequently asked questions
How many questions should I ask?
Three to five that matter to you are enough. Choose them from the list above and skip anything the interviewer already answered.
Is it rude to ask about pay?
No. It is normal to ask about pay, hours and payment terms before accepting a role.
Should I ask about the 30-60-90 plan?
You can. A 30-60-90 plan splits your first three months into goals for the first 30, 60 and 90 days. Asking what the employer expects in each period shows you are thinking about results.
Limitations
Practices differ between employers and countries. Treat this list as a starting point and adjust it to the role.
