Hourly vs Per-Task Pay in AI Training Jobs: How to Compare Offers

When you browse AI training jobs, the number next to the title can mislead you. Some roles pay per hour, some pay per task, and a few pay a flat amount for a single study. Comparing them directly is one of the most common mistakes new applicants make.

The three common pay formats

  • Hourly: you are paid for the time worked, usually within a stated range such as $40-$60 per hour. The range typically reflects your experience and the project.
  • Per task: you are paid a fixed amount for each completed task, for example $65-$75 per task. Your real hourly rate depends on how long each task takes you.
  • One-time or flat: a single payment for a defined deliverable, such as a survey or a research study.

How to estimate your effective hourly rate

For per-task roles, use a simple formula:

Effective hourly rate = pay per task x tasks you complete per hour

If a task pays $70 and you can finish two in an hour, you earn about $140 per hour. If it takes you two hours per task, you earn $35 per hour. Task length is rarely identical, so treat any estimate as a range and ask for guidance on expected time per task when it is available.

Things that change what you actually earn

  • Onboarding time: some projects include paid calibration or training, others do not.
  • Task availability: per-task work depends on how many tasks are released to you.
  • Minimum commitments: some roles expect a weekly minimum number of hours.
  • Payment timing: many listings mention weekly payouts through services such as Stripe or Wise.
  • Currency and fees: check the payout currency and any transfer fees.

A quick checklist before applying

  1. Read the pay unit (hour, task, one-time).
  2. Check the weekly time commitment.
  3. Look for caps or limits on hours or tasks.
  4. Confirm location and eligibility rules.
  5. Estimate your effective rate using a realistic task time.

Bottom line

Do not compare a per-task figure with an hourly figure at face value. Convert both to an expected hourly rate, keep a margin for unpaid setup time, and choose the roles where the numbers still make sense.
