AI Training Jobs for Lawyers: Remote Legal Expert Roles
Lawyers can work in AI training by reviewing and grading how language models handle legal questions, writing legal prompts and reference answers, and testing models for errors. On SOJI, the legal category is one of the better-paid fields, with a median listed minimum of about $90 an hour at the time of writing, though that is what listings show, not what anyone is guaranteed.
This guide covers what legal experts actually do on these projects, what the listings look like, how to apply, and the professional cautions worth thinking through before you start.
What legal experts do on AI projects
AI labs and companies want models that handle legal material accurately, and general text training does not guarantee that. Models can cite cases that do not exist, blur jurisdictions, or state a rule with unwarranted confidence. Lawyers are used to catch those problems. Typical tasks in the legal listings include:
- Grading answers. Reading two or more model responses to a legal question and scoring them against a rubric for accuracy, completeness and reasoning.
- Writing prompts. Drafting realistic, difficult questions of the kind clients or colleagues actually ask.
- Writing reference answers. Producing the ideal response and explaining the legal reasoning behind it.
- Checking citations. Verifying that statutes, cases and quotations exist and say what the model claims.
- Red-teaming. Probing whether a model gives risky advice, ignores jurisdictional limits or misses a disclaimer, and documenting how.
- Reviewing contracts and drafting. Assessing model-written clauses or summaries for ambiguity and risk.

What the listings look like on SOJI
At the time of writing (October 2026), SOJI shows 40 active legal listings. Listed hourly minimums have a median of about $90, and the highest listed maximum in the category reaches $400. Listings come mainly from Mercor and Micro1, so the details differ by posting: some name a jurisdiction, some ask for a law degree or years of practice, and some are open to specialists in particular areas such as contracts, IP or litigation.
| Item | What to look for |
|---|---|
| Pay unit | Hourly or per task; always check. |
| Jurisdiction | Some roles want a specific legal system, such as US law; others are more general. |
| Qualifications | Degree, licence or years of experience, as stated on the listing. |
| Location | Some listings are restricted by country; some cannot support certain US visa types. |
| Duration | Many are project-based with variable hours. |

How to apply as a lawyer
- Build one strong profile. On Mercor your profile and resume are reused across listings. State your practice area, jurisdiction, seniority and the types of matters you have handled. "Corporate lawyer, 10 years, M&A and commercial contracts" is far more useful than "lawyer".
- Translate your work, not your AI knowledge. You are not expected to know machine learning. Reviewing, spotting weak reasoning and explaining why are the skills being used. Our guide on writing a resume for AI training jobs without AI experience applies directly.
- Expect a domain interview. On Mercor the interview is about your field, not about AI, followed by a work-authorisation and location check, then matching to a project. Matching is not guaranteed and can take days or weeks. The steps are laid out in how getting hired on Mercor works step by step.
- Apply to several relevant listings. Screening steps are shared, so applying to a few that fit your specialisation is reasonable. On Micro1, follow the steps shown on each listing.
- Answer honestly. Do not overstate qualifications or use AI to write answers you are meant to give yourself. Your judgement is what is being hired.
Professional cautions to think through
Legal work comes with duties that other fields do not share, so it is worth pausing on a few points before you accept any project:
- Client confidentiality. Never feed real client matters, privileged information or identifiable facts into a task. Use only the material the project provides, and follow its rules on what you may share.
- Conflicts and employer rules. If you are employed at a firm or in-house, check your contract and professional rules on outside work and conflicts of interest. Some employers restrict side projects.
- Unauthorised practice of law. Writing reference answers is not giving legal advice to a client, but keep the distinction clear and read project instructions about disclaimers.
- Regulator guidance. Your bar or law society may have guidance on outside activity and technology. We cannot tell you what yours requires; check it.
None of these cautions are reasons not to apply, but they are reasons to read terms carefully and ask the platform or your regulator when something is unclear.
Pay: what to expect and how to read it
For context, the legal category sits near the top of the fields on SOJI, alongside finance, and engineering and science, by median listed minimum. As listed at the time of writing, Mercor hourly roles run from about $59 up to $350 across all fields, with a median of listed minimums near $80, and Micro1 spans a very wide range. These are listing figures, not typical earnings. Hours are often variable, projects end, and some roles pay per task, so converting a listed rate into a monthly income is unreliable. See hourly vs per-task pay in AI training jobs for a way to compare fairly.
Engagements are independent-contractor arrangements. Tax treatment depends on your country and situation. This is general information, not tax or legal advice: check your country's rules or ask an accountant.
Quick checklist
- My profile states practice area, jurisdiction and seniority.
- I checked the listing's jurisdiction, qualification and location requirements.
- I confirmed the pay unit and expected hours.
- I will never use real client or privileged material in a task.
- I checked my employment contract and professional rules on outside work.
- I am applying to a few relevant listings, not all of them.
Limitations
Applying does not guarantee a project. Availability depends on current demand in your specialism and jurisdiction, and it can change quickly. Some legal listings may favour certain legal systems, which can limit options for lawyers qualified elsewhere. SOJI does not control platform decisions, project terms or payment, and cannot guarantee outcomes.
